This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My adorable kids are eager learners and love to read. I have 27 students in my first grade class. This is an ICT class with general and special education students. I would love to see them reach the reading goals set for this year. "The book doesn't fit in the bag" a student said.

This is a special education class and general ed class.

On a typical day, my students come to the classroom and grab their zip-lock book baggies and read during independent reading time, during lunch when it rains, and they also take them home. Students in our school come from very poor families who are trying to make ends meet. Our school is a Title I school. This means that 99% of our school population lives below the poverty level and is entitled to a free lunch program. Although the students in our school are very poor and have limited resources, they are always eager to learn and are very enthusiastic. Our school is located in a very poor section of New York City. Most of our students live in housing projects or shelters. Across from our school there is a highway which exacerbates the impact of asthma in our children. The resources available to the school are very limited and since the parents are so poor we really cannot ask them for too many supplies.

My Project

These book baggies we are asking for will be very beneficial to my first grade class. They would work wonderful and will push our reading agenda forward. Our student would be able to take better care of their books since the zip-lock bags tear up and the books can get wet an torn. These book baggies would come in handy since the students are carrying this books back and forth to and from class. It would also help our student feel proud of taking out their books where ever they go. The students would be able to carry more reading books and not feel limited to the books that fit in the zip-lock baggies. These nice reading baggies will foment an environment and love for reading. We also need book bins to place the books when they come back to school.

Research show that the more opportunities a child has to read, the better readers they become.

If they have books able to them all the time the more they will enjoy reading. These book baggies would make possible that they carry their books everywhere they go. My students will be able to take better care of their books. The baggies along with the book bins will help us ta carte of our books and keep them organize the books.
