Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We start our morning with the teacher stating that the students are champs! They are champs and need to be told that daily. They know that this is an acronym for coats and backpacks put away, homework turned in, all notes on the teacher’s desk, make dismissal changes, and pencils sharpened. My students live in an urban setting dominated by a low income Hispanic population; all students qualify for the free or reduced price lunch program. Our school building, the oldest in the district, is one hundred and eight years old.
We are a culturally diverse class with very diverse learning styles.
I currently have students enrolled from multiple countries. Some of those countries include Nepal, Vietnam, Thailand, Iraq, Laos, Niger, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, China, Kuwait, Mexico, Mumbai, Guatemala, and Cambodia. We have many students that are in transition. These students are very happy to attend school and are extremely willing to learn. The majority of the students are English Language Learners. With such a diverse classroom, my students have a high tolerance for other cultures and are respectful of what other students are going through.
My Project
This project will bring a variety of board games into my classroom. There is value in learning through play. Board games provide children with the opportunity to build math skills, exercise logic, utilize strategical thinking, take turns, make tough choices, learn that actions have consequences, develop good sportsmanship, and learn about team effort.
Board games entertain while educating and bringing people together through competitive yet cooperative gameplay.
This project will give them an introduction to many tried and true games that require logic. Board games give children time to develop social skills and learn life skills that will carry them into their adult life.
