Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarteners are a wildly curious bunch of little learners who care about plants, animals, and the earth. They think about the world in flexible ways, ask questions about people and places, and are interested in homes, bats, outer space, and digging holes. My students spent lots of time setting up our classroom at the beginning of the school year and worked together to label, organize, and move around our materials.
Our classroom is OUR space, and setting up our space has been a deeply collaborative experience.
We are always looking for ways to improve it, welcome new ideas, and work hard to fill it with things we love and care about as well as things that challenge us and spark joy.
My Project
My kindergarteners are fiercely creative! They spend lots of time painting, drawing, building forts, and constructing with paper and tape. Our classroom is brand new and we started the school year with limited supplies, which encouraged my students to make incredible creations out of what they could find. They collect loose parts for decorations and details on the animal homes they build out of cardboard I bring in from home. They make their own books, they use bottle caps to make instruments, and they use the few blocks we were gifted to make intricate castles and towers.
Keva Planks are simple and sturdy and will encourage my littles to dig deeper into concepts such as balance, proportion, design, and creativity!
These blocks will be a priceless contribution to our classroom. Not only will we grow as engineers and mathematicians, but we will be able to practice our collaboration, communication, and motor skills through the power of play!
This year I have learned that children have the innate ability to make fun and be deeply occupied in their play and work without many frills. They do not need a lot, but they do need blocks. I hope these small, minimalist blocks will help us stay true to the things my students value: joy, detail, and construction!
