This is my first year teaching a fourth grade class in a dual language program in Brooklyn. My students include a combination of English language speakers and native Spanish language speakers. They are a very diverse community of learners that work together and love sharing their ideas with each other.
My fourth graders are thoughtful inquisitive, creative, and full of energy.
They enjoy learning in Spanish and English and they are eager writers and readers. They challenge me and each other to work harder and learn every day.
My students are learning in two languages. They love reading and writing in Spanish and English. They are also learning science and social studies in both languages, but they often encounter new words that they don’t know. Unfortunately, we only have one dictionary for the whole class and they have to wait for their turn to use it. I need to have a set of dictionaries so many students can use them at the same time.
In a bilingual classroom, one of the essential skills that students learn is how to use a dictionary so they can grow as readers and writers.
