This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember being a kid in school and having the opportunity to express yourself through art? Students have less and less of a chance to really do art at school. Our students have special needs, but feel so much confidence after they are able to complete something that they enjoy.
My students have disabilities ranging from Autism to Down Syndrome and Di Georges Syndrome.
They are grades K-7 and are ages 5-13. They attend a very diverse school in a low income area and face many challenges. Our supplies are depleted and the district has called for more and more cuts next year. When we go to our supply room there are no more markers or any other type of art supplies and our markers are running out of ink every day. Because our students have disabilities it is typically easier for our students to learn how to write using markers. It is very difficult to teach them with the supplies we have which are constantly needed to be thrown away but never replaced.
My Project
By providing these art supplies we will be able to provide meaningful lessons to our students using art. Many of them learn by doing and feel a lot of confidence when they are able to complete something and we are able to display it. I have had many of the same students for 4-5 years and I would love to have something new in the classroom for my students to enjoy doing again. This will help them learn how to write and will give them confidence. It will also probably motivate some of my students to work because they would love doing many of these projects. The arts and crafts like being able to paint animals will motivate them. The markers will add color to their every day life and the play-dough will teach them play skills.
These supplies are so important to our classroom and our school and will add so many different dynamics to our classroom.
I want to be able to provide my students with as many opportunities as every one else has. They need access to art and it must be art that relates to them, inspires them and gives them confidence in themselves. I believe that this art can do that for them and I am so excited to start using these things in the classroom. THANKS!
