These flexible seating options have been especially impactful for our students whose modes of learning were not being accommodated for due to our physical classroom space lacking these furniture options. \r\n\r\nMy students with especially wiggly bodies and shorter attention spans have been showing incredible autonomy and focus in being able to use the wobble stools during small group time and the two different floor cushions during whole group/carpet time. \r\nWhen I introduced the floor cushions to my students, I specifically started by individually showing the students I knew would benefit most from this seating option. Student 1 lit up and immediately tried it out. After our small group time she came up to me, gave me a hug, and placed the cushion back in its home, without saying anything. But her hug said everything. She felt seen. Since then, she has reached for the cushion on her own, sat comfortably and calmly, and focused on group time with so much enthusiasm. Prior to implementing this seating option, she was constantly getting up from the carpet and finding reasons not to be there. It's like night and day! Student 1 is just one example of many of my students who have been benefiting greatly from the floor cushions so far.\r\n\r\nStudents 2 and 3 are a few of those that I have introduced the wobble stools to. Prior, these two students would need constant reminders to sit in their chair safely during small group time (i.e. to refrain from leaning or rocking so as not to fall). Now, they have the option to do what their body wants to do—move—while seated! The wobble stools give them the opportunity to do so safely and they both experience small group time with so much more interest and peace because they use their \"wiggle chairs\" (as Student 2 calls his) to help focus safely, without needing constant reminders.\r\n\r\nFinally, this week we introduced the floor desks. The students have been so excited about this new seating option! We introduced them as a new center along with books and whisper phones for a couple of days and today, as name tracing practice. It's safe to say I had never seen so many of my students so eager to practice tracing their name. This reminded me just how powerful providing furniture that is built for our little students can be in supporting their excitement for learning, comfortability in their environment, and autonomy in making choices that most interest them and build upon their learning.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for our classroom are to integrate these flexible seating options into all parts of our day and to have them be accessible to all students at all times. Currently, we are rolling them out little by little on a limited basis as our students do best with gradual exposure to new things. \r\n\r\nThe introduction of flexible seating in our classroom so far has proven to be so rewarding for our students and their learning experiences. We learned about the 3 main phases of matter at the beginning of the unit: solid, liquid and gas. But during this lab, we learned about an exception to the rule: Non-Newtonian fluids! Non-Newtonian fluids are fluids that have the characteristics of a solid when force is applied, but have the characteristics of a liquid when there is no force. Slime is a perfect (and fun) way to experience this unique type of matter.\r\n\r\nThe students didn't believe me at first when I told them that they were going to make slime as a part of their unit. I told them at the beginning of the unit that we were going to make slime at the end, and it offered a great motivator throughout the unit. This was a very fun way to end the unit with an interactive lab. Your donations have provided theraputty for fine motor skill development, reading workbooks with 100s of fun reading and writing activities as well as a sensory regulation strategy book.\r\n I coteach a class with our school site occupational therapist and we use the putty to build our students' fine motor muscles through different exercises using the putty. There are 6-8 students in the group. The students love the putty activities. The exercises improve their fine motor muscles which leads to improved fine motor control for tracing, penmanship and writing stamina. We also teach regulation strategies such as deep breathing and calming stretches learned from a donated sensory regulation book. \r\n The reading and writing workbooks have been utilized to supplement my reading programs and the students' general education curriculum. These materials are based on Orton Gillingham's program and are very supportive for students with Dyslexia. Over 15 students are completing these activities daily. The activities are visually appealing and fun to complete. They reinforce letter sound practice, sight word learning and early decoding skills. Many of these students have moved up reading levels since incorporating these activities into their routines.\r\n Your donations have improved my lessons and my students' learning.
