This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
At our school, we have 30 outstanding students with autism within five classrooms. Each autistic support teacher here tries to set up their classroom as both a sensory room and an academic learning room, which is pretty challenging. We were given an empty classroom this year to make into the sensory space of our dreams, but it is desperately lacking. We are a public city school with minimal resources, and my students deserve better than that.
A person with autism may experience difficulties interpreting and organizing input from what they see, taste, touch, hear and smell.
Sensory perceptions can become frightening or even painful and can lead to high anxiety and meltdowns. The two ride and rollers, rocking chair and tunnel will help with sensory calming as well as motor planning. The privacy cubes will allow students to calm down on their own while remaining in a safe environment shutting out all outside stimulation. The lights and liquid steps will become objects they use to stim which can be very calming.
