My Students

I teach at a Title I school for grades 2 and 3 that serves many military families, foster families, and Native American students. Our school is part of a program through the food bank that sends food home on the weekends. As is so common in these difficult economic times, many of our students come to school without supplies or money for any of the extras that children in higher income schools might take for granted.

The students in my class are at many different intellectual levels, but they all arrive eager to learn and looking forward to new experiences in my classroom.

When they are interested and see value in a lesson, they work even harder.

I love when they greet me in the hall with a smile that shows they are glad to be at school and happy to start our day together!

My Project

Our classroom has a concrete floor with a nice coat of fresh paint to start our year. With small shoes walking on it for even a few weeks, it starts to show scratches and scuffs. This 120 Grid Activity Carpet will allow us to preserve the paint under the carpet while giving my students a comfortable place to sit during group learning activities. This colorful carpet has been a dream of mine for years due to the many uses of the 120 math grid! It even comes with an activity guide for teachers. Children at this age love to move and learn better when they are active.

Children will be able to stand in the spaces as we learn concepts ranging from simple counting to more complex place value lessons.

I love to read aloud to my students as much as possible. It is more interesting for them when they can sit on a rug on the floor next to my reading chair. When children work together in partners or small groups, collaboration is easier in a comfortable atmosphere. Students get along better with each other and tolerate minor issues with other students when they can do activities on a soft rug on the floor. Items being used for science and math projects don’t roll as far as they do when they fall off of the top of desks and tables. This means less frustration and prevents disagreements between students in class.

This carpet will benefit hundreds of children since it is guaranteed for 10 years. It is safe because it meets fire-resistance standards of the Uniform Building Code. As perfect as it is for my young students, we will need kind people like you to help us get this rug onto our classroom floor.
