My students need a garden! The playground of our school is blacktop ... many students have not had the opportunity to investigate where our healthy food comes from.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic 4 year olds who love to learn! Our class is made up of 8 boys and 9 girls. Our small school is a kind and caring learning environment, nestled in a neighborhood just outside of downtown Los Angeles. Approximately 75% of our students are considered economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our population is diverse, with students coming from many ethnic backgrounds. We have received the honors of Title I High Achieving School and California Distinguished School.
My Project
My 4 year old students live in a neighborhood with a lot of cement and very few gardens. I would love to use raised planters to plant a vegetable garden on our play yard.
Planting and caring for our garden will help my students develop an understanding of Life Science, nutrition, and responsibility.
They will use the scientific skills of observation and recording as they watch our garden grow. We will keep a scientific journal over time to record changes. Kids will be responsible for caring for our garden. They will have the opportunity to participate in lessons about nutrition.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
