Every morning we get to school and have our breakfast. We are developmentally delayed children and our class is in a trailer off the end of an elementary school. After breakfast, it's off to circle time to learn! We don't all fit on the small carpet we have and we'd like more room to learn and grow.
There are 13 handicapped children in this class and they are all serious about learning, but the conditions have to be better.
We are in a very poor section of an urban city where the parents have little to no resources. We, as teachers, have to purchase items like paper, crayons, glue and scissors. We do not get a budget to work from. The students are second and third grade age, but are functioning much lower than that. We try to teach the letters, numbers and how to print sentences so they can communicate with others. We like to gather together on the carpet to learn some of the concepts like days of the week and months of the year. Our students learn from each other, so that is why we sit on the carpet to learn many concepts.
My Project
We need a carpet to place near the calendar that I purchased so we can learn calendar skills. This carpet will be so much better because there is not enough room on the old one that we currently have. Some of the children have to sit on the floor and it is cold because it is an old trailer that our classroom exists in. The children all appear to be capable learners but the environment needs to be right.
We put words all over the room according to the alphabet letter it starts with and from the carpet we can see all around the room. It is a perfect vantage point. The school recruits volunteer readers and we would be able to sit on the carpet to hear a story and then they donate the books to us. The students in the classroom love being next to each other as a group instead of at desks because they are able to hear each other better to learn from each other.
This will help our classroom so much because we learn together as a group.
This will enhance this old trailer and keep us warmer than we are because the floor is so cold in the winter months. This carpet will allow me to sit on the floor as their instructor and help them learn. The paraprofessionals will also have the room to be able to sit with the students who need the most help and cue them with with the correct answers. We would never have the resources to order this from the district.
