I teach in a low-income and urban school district where every student is on the free lunch program. We have approximately 385 students and a very high mobility rate. Our school also has an extremely large special education population, about one-sixth of our students have special needs. Most of our students are eager to come to school because it is their safe place. The place where they get two hot meals and love and support from each staff member. We have made tremendous growth the past two years raising our students reading scores to get them ready for life. We encourage them to dream about their futures and what they can become.
The 6th grade class has been working hard on learning the natural history of the world. Many of the students have a hard time visualizing the history. I would like to take them to the Sam Noble history museum so the lessons they have been learning can come to life!
I want to give them a real world experience that connects to classroom studies.
This experience would help students understand that everything that is taught in the classroom has a real life purpose. This trip would also further their understanding of the different kinds of systems that make up our planet.
