My Students
How would you like to be at work all day without a time or place to socialize and relax with others? You wouldn't like that at all. Well, my students also need a place and time to relax and socialize with their peers after completing academic assignments.
My students have autism spectrum disorders.
They attend a school that only serves students with special needs. Our school is located in a low income area. We don't have as many resources as we would like, however, we do our best to give students the best that we have! Many students with autism spectrum disorders have difficulty with social skills and peer to peer interaction. Therefore, I would like to create a leisure and social area where students can play and talk to each other.
My Project
Many of my students haven't learned how to have 'fun' in the traditional sense. As an educator, it is up to me to help my students learn how to engage with their peers. We do a lot of academic work. Students need breaks to help them from becoming overwhelmed. They often stay at their desk to take a break. My students need an area that they can go to to take a break. My students need a carpet and beanbag chair so that they can have a social skills and leisure area. I will use the area to encourage students to choose a friend to take a break with. It will be an area where social skills will be developed.
Donations for this project will help me foster my students' social skills.
Students with autism spectrum disorders thrive with structure. Therefore, a carpet and beanbag chair will become their cue to their break and social skills area. These materials will help my students have a better day as well. I will be able to create an inviting area for my students to relax and develop social skills.
