This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is considered a second home to many of my students. I teach 5th grade in Brooklyn NY. Our students come from many diverse cultures and are from low income families. The cultural diversity in or school is what makes the environment very unique. We as adults, learn with our students every day. Our teachers are the examples of adults that our students look up to as role models. Because of that, I strive everyday to be the best teacher I can be for these kids.
Our students are so special because they work so hard on things that others take for granted.
Our students choose to come to school everyday!
My Project
First and foremost, our student population is 90% Hispanic. These children speak only Spanish in their homes, and are expected to learn English only in school. As you can imagine, this is quite challenging. Our ESL population is expected to learn at the same pace, and the same topics as our native English speakers. Unfortunately, this is the educational climate we live on today.
I feel that it is my personal responsibility to the students, to make my Entering English Language Learners feel like they belong in my classroom, and that requires providing them with material that will enable them to succeed.
Having a bilingual library will allow these students to read just like everyone else and not feel less than the others. Enabling our classroom with access to a printer to provide instantaneous visuals for them as needed will help them to reach this level of success.
These basic classroom tools will give my students a sense of accomplish that will give the the confidence to keep on learning.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
