Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As 8th graders, my students are getting ready to forge into high school and become more independent learners. I would like to give them the tools and experiences necessary to be ready for the learning that is ahead for them.

I have 103 unique and amazing students who come from different backgrounds and have very different learning needs--they all love to be read to; however, many of them are not interested in reading on their own!

One thing that brings them all together is their love of stories and their creative, compassionate nature. My students are very interested in fair treatment, which makes this project particularly exciting.

Our diversity allows us to learn not only from the curriculum but from each other, making every experience and every day a learning opportunity. Once they get to high school, these young adults will be expected to read on their own. If I provide them with enough rich opportunities and a variety of stories to read, their fluency will continue to increase, therefore affording them more opportunity for success as independent learners.

My Project

For the past several years, I have focused an argument unit on Dr. King's Dream that all "people" should have basic civil rights. The addition of these inspiring titles will add to the rich library in our classroom.

I cannot stress the importance of having rich, relevant literature for students to read in preparation for this argument unit.

My students love to see people treated fairly, which is one of the reasons this unit is so successful. It is my hope to add to the library of books I already have on my shelves so that they can choose a variety of titles to read before we begin gathering research material in preparation to write argument.
