My students need 100 soprano recorders so they can experience the joy of creating music.

My Students
Help us make and create music on our own! My students love to be actively involved in the music-making process but have not had the opportunity to experience the joy of truly creating their own music by playing recorders.
My students are elementary students, grades 1-5, who attend a public school in Illinois.
The majority of the students are in the low-income or poverty bracket, with over 95% of them qualifying for free or reduced lunches at school. My students are hard workers who have very good attendance records. They attend music twice a week. Many of our students find success in music and art and carry that confidence to their regular classroom. These students should have an opportunity to use instruments as a part of their music curriculum. Our district currently does not allocate any funding for elementary classroom instrument purchases.
My Project
Third, fourth, and fifth grade students will have the opportunity to explore melody, harmony, and rhythm as they are actively engaged in the music-making process when playing soprano recorders. Students will also have the chance to improvise and create their own melodies. Music should be about creating and making music, not sitting in a chair singing songs out of a textbook. I want my students to have every opportunity to be actively engaged, and recorders provide excellent avenues for active music making for elementary-age students.
Our school district is facing tremendous financial challenges, and there are no funds allocated for elementary music classrooms.
I am passionate about providing opportunities for my students to play instruments and have to look outside my district for ways to make instrument purchases possible. Thank you for considering this project and helping my students experience the joys of making music!
