My students are public school elementary students in grades 1-5. The majority of the students are in the low-income or poverty bracket, with over 95% of them qualifying for free or reduced lunches at school. The majority of students at our school are African-American. Many of our students do not read at grade level and struggle to find success in the school environment. Even though it seems like many of them have the deck stacked against them, they come to school every day ready to work and learn. For some of our students, music and art are venues for success. They develop confidence and find ways to express themselves appropriately through music and art.
