When I took over the tech department, I discovered that the previous teacher had been running a multimedia class... without cameras. And cameras are a necessity when you're trying to make movies.
When I realized this, I got 4 used camcorders off eBay.
These have been a little hit and miss. At least one of them can't record audio at all. Another doesn't have working zoom, and only focuses about a third of the time. A third drains batteries like water out of a bathtub.
Because I only have the 4 cameras, the groups for making videos are huge. Minimum 5 students, meaning that a lot of them are standing around instead of filming. This is a simulation of what it's really like to work on a film set, but no one enjoys it.
I want a few cameras so that we can have more filming groups, and so we can build a more effective multimedia class. We've been limping along this year without decent cameras, but we can do so much more. I've seen what they come up with. It's impressive. And I think with better camcorders, we could do even more in the class.
