This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most kindergrtners cannot read independently yet, but they love to listen to stories. Having a functioning listening center would be very special for them.

I am lucky enough to work in a wonderful school in a classroom full of 24 special, caring, and energetic kindergartners.

Our school is large, just under 1,000 students and most are on free or reduced lunch and a large population are English Language Learners. In our classroom we love reading, acting out stories, and writing our own. I have been very fortunate in inheriting 2 classroom libraries from retiring teachers, so my students have hundreds of books at their fingertips everyday.

My Project

I am requesting some new books on CD for our listening center. Our listening center gets used my numerous students throughout the day. They are able to turn on the radio and sit with a friend and listen to a story through headphones. I purchased a simple stereo to play the tapes and CDs, sadly the tape portion of the stereo no longer works. Luckily the CD portion still works great! But, since a lot of my listening center library was given to me by veteran teachers, most of my audio books are on tape. This means I am unable to change the story at the listening center as often as I would like. I would like to be able to change it every week. This way students will continue to be engaged in listening to the stories and I will be able to expose them more of a variety of genres and authors.

The 24 wonderful students in my class this year and my future students would benefit greatly from these books on CD.

Dr. Seuss said, "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." I believe this and I believe in my students.
