My students need books that support them at the lower levels. They also need centers in the classroom to support phonemic awareness (hearing letter sounds and rhyming).
I have 22 lovely students who come from various special needs and nationalities. I teach at a Title l school with a high percentage of high poverty children. Many of my students have not had access to preschool or literacy-rich homes.
The children who come to my classroom often come with no knowledge of letters or letter sounds.
They have parents who do not read to them, for any number of reasons, and have not been exposed to language. Many of these children are also dealing with trying to learn how to speak English as well as trying to learn how to read.
My Project
For most of my students, kindergarten is their first experience with school. Many of them come from homes that are not rich in literacy and do not know letters and sounds or even how to rhyme.
I am requesting some early leveled readers and activities to support early literacy.
Early leveled books are engaging and the pictures support the text so that children can learn words easily. I hope to use these books both in the classroom and to allow children to take them home share their skills with their parents. Since these students do not have books, sharing these at home will make them feel special and successful. It may also encourage their parents to access more books at our local libraries.
Alphabet and rhyming centers will help them learn the phonemic awareness skills that support the ability to later sound out words and read. Making these centers fun and engaging will allow the students to have fun as they learn.
