We Love to Read So Much We're Running Out of Books

My students need five copies of 13 titles to choose from when participating in Literature Circles.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Bishay's classroom raised $582

This project is fully funded

My class consists of nineteen third graders from many ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Approximately half of my students are a part of the free lunch program. For some, English is not their first language. My students vary in ability, but all exhibit a strong desire to learn and succeed in school and in life. Because I have instituted something called Literature Circles in my classroom, where students make choices about the stories they will read, my students have gone from moaning and groaning about reading to begging for more time each day. As a result of my students' voracious appetite for good literature, I am running out of things for them to read. I am in great need of multiple copies of chapter books that my students can read and discuss. These titles will be read by self-selected groups of students who vary in decoding and comprehension abilities. Through these Literature Circles, my students have been, and will continue to develop as authentic, life-long readers. They not only improve in their ability to read more fluently, but they are also practicing comprehension strategies and skills that they previously learned, in a “real-life” way, on their own. Through the discussions and journaling that follows, my students are not only deepening their appreciation for literature, but their ability to interact with it. Your help in this matter will enable my students to continue down this path…a path that leads to reading success. You will make it possible for my students to learn and grow as readers and people as they delve into the books that you have provided for them.
