We Love to Read Our Math Magazines!

My students need access to literacy in the math content area. The Scholastic Math magazine helps them see the connections on how math is used in the real world.

My Students

Math doesn't have to be boring! In fact, math is an amazing tool that we use to understand the world around us. Inside my math classroom, we spend time dissecting how math is relevant to our daily lives. This keeps students engaged and connected with math on a constant basis.

Everyday, about 110 energetic middle school students pass through my doorway.

Our classroom motto is "Work Hard, Play Hard". They know the routines and structures which helps our smooth transitions. Each moment in class has meaning and is meant to be actively thinking about math.

My Project

I integrate literacy into our math classroom because research shows that students make stronger connections to math when it is used in a real to life context. Students who have more experiences with how math is used in the real world are less inclined to suffer from math anxiety. My middle schoolers love to be social. They like to talk about themselves, current trends and events, and analyze the world around them. The Scholastic Math magazines allows them to be teenagers while directing their energy to math related concepts. In the magazine, they are able to learn about new technologies around the world, critique the work of others and see how math is used in art and music. This magazine is just one other technique to get kids to read and do math simultaneously!

If this project is funded, this would be our second year of having the magazines in our classroom.

My students anticipate reading the newest edition that is released, especially when it is tied into the concepts we are learning in class. The magazine serves not only as an extension to our grade level curriculum, but can be used as a tool to practice concepts that were previously taught as a review.
