Where I teach we get a plethora of students whose backgrounds are as diverse as the species of fish in the sea. Each one comes with different background knowledge and attitudes for how the respond to their environment. I’ve had students who are obsessed with vampires and have to be told not to use their vampire teeth at school, to students who want to be fashion designers AND veterinarians at the same time. These kiddos are looking for ways to connect with their world but growing up here there isn’t much of a global view! These kids are fiercely loyal to those that they know love them and support them.
My Project
Having these books available to my students will help grow their background knowledge. Many of my students don’t come to me knowing much about what’s going on in the world, or what has already happened in the world. As a teacher at an IB World School, I feel really passionate about trying to find as many ways as I can to help expose my students to different cultures, ideas, and belief systems. I feel like providing more options for their independent reading in the classroom and options for me to do read-aloud books with my students can develop a broader back ground knowledge! This will help them all throughout their lives and gives them opportunities to connect to ideas that are different than their own!
