Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is Title I and in a very depressed and impoverished area. Many of our students are new to our country, language and culture. They all are excited about art and telling their stories by drawing and painting.
My students range in age from 1st to 5th grade, and they all love to create art.
They are new immigrants to our country and art is their favorite class because it is a universal language. I teach in a Title I district which means that the families and area is very poor. It is often hard for them to put enough food on the table in these hard economic times. Art helps all of us forget our problems and create new worlds with paint.
My Project
I teach over 200 students a quarter and supplies quickly vanish. My students enjoy expressing themselves through paint and need canvas for their art painting projects. My students need Gesso paint for a primer and 34 painting canvases. This project will give us 34 painting canvases for one class of fifth graders. The canvas is needed to develop their artistic skills through paint. The gesso is needed as a primer to cover partially painted canvases from previous classes.
