We have run out of pages in our journals! Our classes love to draw and write, but our pencils and journals have almost run out. We need journals that will last the rest of the year, and sturdy pencils that can stand up to our busy hands.
We are two classes (AM & PM) of Kindergarten students in Nevada.
We LOVE school, and our teacher LOVES to teach us how to draw & write. In fact, we are learning to read AND write at the same time. We are so proud to tell others about the pictures we draw in our journals. Our teacher draws "mystery pictures" most mornings for us on the overhead projector. These are step by step pictures of things like giraffes, hot air balloons, sea animals, and lots of other fun pictures. She does not tell us what the picture is at first... we have to think about it while we draw. It is SO exciting to talk to our friends during writing, and share with each other what we think the picture might be and what details we are going to make in our own journal. We learn so much when we journal. Our teacher makes sure we know new vocabulary that goes with the mystery picture, that we use our sight words and invented spelling in our writing, and we even talk about the day and date each morning!
My Project
Writing is the best way to learn how to read. When a child can put a thought down on paper that is read to and understood by another person, magic happens! They have made the first step in their life to becoming an author. We author things everyday as adults. We compose e-mails, write notes, make shopping lists, and dozens of other daily tasks that require our ability to write. We also write down our opinions, dreams, plans and feelings. To foster this skill in young children gives them a great start in their life of being literate and a lover of the writing process. For a Kindergarten student to put a pencil to a piece of paper and create something meaningful to them... well it is just a beautiful thing!
Your donation will provide a high quality journal for two groups of Kindergarten students, safe and sturdy pencils to last us the rest of the year, a rock solid high quality pencil sharpener to keep the teacher happy and not frustrated with her current worn out model, and an awesome set of colored pencils (hmmm... no wood, just color??
