Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are first and foremost a wonderful and kind group of hardworking kids. They come to school every day with smiles on their faces and determination in their hearts. Our school is in a high poverty area. Many students face significant challenges at home. Despite these challenges, we work hard every day to challenge ourselves to grow both academically and socially.

Second grade is a crucial time for reading growth.

In 2nd grade, students are expected to master phonics and decoding skills so they can begin to apply those skills. Having access to authentic texts is crucial to showing students how they can apply their skills and how reading can open up new worlds for them.

My Project

We received our first shipment of Donor's Choose books a few days ago and my students are DEVOURING their new reading materials! However, more than anything else, my students have loved reading books about superheroes and animals more than anything else. I asked them to vote on which topic we should get more of and everyone said, "We want ALL our classmates to have books they love." I couldn't agree more.

Reading books on topics of interest allows young readers to stretch themselves to phenomenal new heights!

Now that we've discovered the topics we love the most, please help us cultivate those interests with a brand new shipment of books.
