This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a fantastic group of young people. They go through many struggles in their young lives, and have overcome many obstacles. My group of students are diverse and come from different backgrounds. Almost all of them come from low income homes. Some of them have disabilities. They attend the charter school because their families believe in our mission and want better for them.
My students have formed a love for learning and want to be at school.
They work hard every day despite the difficult circumstances of their home life. Our curriculum is challenging and rigorous, but my students are tackling it with enthusiasm, and are grateful for the opportunities they are given. I am excited to come to school to learn and grow with them every day.
My Project
Young children often learn by play. In our classroom, play is often incorporated into the curriculum, especially in science and social studies. In science, the children often learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). A huge part of this is learning to build and create structures. It is a great way for the students to learn about these concepts.
Perhaps there is the next Frank Lloyd Wright, Mae Jemison, or Elon Musk in my classroom.
The magnet tiles, Straws, Tinker Toys, and other building toys will be used as morning work and for children that finish their work early to build something related to what we are studying as an enrichment "challenge". For example, when we study symbols of the United States, the children could build a US monument or other symbol.
The STEM toys will also be used during inside recess to free build. By learning about STEM through play, the children will develop not only scientific, technological and engineering knowledge, but will learn about team work and cooperation by playing together. They will learn persistence and perseverance as they try new way to build. They will learn problem solving skills. All of this learning will happen as they are having fun!
