My students come in to my classroom every day excited to learn. They come from many different backgrounds and a variety of cultures but they are all eager to be successful and make a difference in the world. Each one has a vision for their future.
For many of my students, school is the most stable environment in their lives.
I teach in a Title I elementary school in Florida where the majority of students are on free or reduced-price lunch. Their living and family situations are not ideal but each one has a desire to learn and make someone proud.
Some students are in transitional housing, some live in homeless shelters or with multiple generations. Their individual needs may be different depending on the economic struggles they face but each day we work together to meet everyone's social emotional needs. My students have empathy, compassion and are kind. We are working to make the world a better place by learning together.
My Project
The majority of my students receive free or reduced lunch and free breakfast, however, they usually don't have snacks available to them. Our schedule has a long period of time between their arrival to school and their lunchtime. Many students are hungry the last hour before lunch.
Students suffering from food insecurities have trouble focusing on their schoolwork.
By supplying students with healthy snacks such as fruit snacks and popcorn they can get whenever they are hungry will alleviate stress during their day. Providing students with a safe secure environment allows them the opportunity to learn and be the best version of themselves.
