Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a high poverty area. They have many obstacles to overcome before they even get to school. Many are ESL newcomers who are adjusting to a new environment. Some are home alone while their parents are working. They may be living with grandparents or in foster care because of situations they have no control over.

Incredibly, they mostly come with a heart full of love and a desire to learn.

Being engaged in their reading material, fuels that desire.

My Project

Do you remember the first time you fell in love with a book? I have the opportunity to see that on my student's faces on a weekly basis. Picture books and graphic novels help support English language learners in my classroom. By giving them access to current titles, my students stay engaged and enjoy every minute of reading time.

As they grow as readers, their writing skills also improve.

We love taking mentor sentences and trying our hand at the craft of writing. Spelling City gives them the opportunity to learn new words in a fun interface. Through playing games, students are reinforcing their spelling skills.
