This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine curling up with a good book in a comfy chair, or flipping through a magazine because you just don't feel like picking up that novel. My students read silently at their desks for 20 minutes daily, but some get tired and antsy. I'd like to make their reading experience a little more enjoyable.

I currently have 21 students.

They come from different ethnic and financial backgrounds. Additionally, they have different reading levels as well as interests. Many of them are interested in reading and enjoy silent reading time as well as my daily read aloud. At the same time, there are a few that are struggling readers or are just not interested in reading. I want to make reading enjoyable for ALL of my students, especially those who are struggling or uninterested in reading.

My Project

My classroom library is full of chapter books. I have a partial set of encyclopedias and a really old and slow computer. The Time For Kids and Scholastic magazines will be additional resources for Science, Social Studies and Language Arts that my students can use for research. This is in addition to being something that my students can read instead of chapter books. The bean bags will be used to add a little comfort to our classroom library. I will also use them to reward students for reading during silent reading time, or to entice those who usually don't read. "Only students who are reading can be chosen to sit in the bean bag chairs!" Paper trays and lids will be used for magazine organization throughout the year.

These items will not only give us additional resources for Language Arts, Writing, Science and Social Studies.

They will also make my class's reading experience more enjoyable. I want to foster a love of reading in all of my students, not just the ones with high fluency and comprehension skills who already love reading.
