This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are a wonderful group of 5th and 6th graders who are excited to come to school and learn. They always bring a smile to my face and I absolutely love learning with them. There are a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single-parent, multiple-family, foster, migrant, and military families, to name a few. Our students also come from various ethnic backgrounds, with a large portion being Hispanic, Punjabi and African American, which brings a large population of English Learners.

Teaching a combination class can be difficult, but with IXL it made it much more manageable and gave the students meaningful independent practice.

IXL is an online program that allows students to look up topics, standards, and skills on their own to practice, or a teacher can give them an assignment. This is my 9th year teaching a combination class of 5th and 6th grade, and no program has ever had such a positive impact on my classroom! While I am doing direct teaching for one grade level, the other grade level has been utilizing IXL for independent practice or for frontloading a lesson. This program has been a game changer for my entire classroom and the students' math scores prove it. When a student gets a problem incorrect, it will walk them through the correct steps they need to take next time. We use both math and ELA almost daily!

My class also really enjoys the "group jam" option, where we all work on the same question at the same time. Answers are submitted anonymously, only the teacher can see the names or icons of other students. Then we review the steps to the problem all together. It has been very helpful to use with graphing, as trying to find enough graphing examples is very difficult.
