My students need historical novels including 14 copies of The Rock and the River and Fire in the Streets along with a copy of Black Against Empire for their civil rights unit.

My Students
Historical novels are a portable time machine. They take my classroom back to exciting settings in a way that our history textbook cannot. The present day melts away and my students see things through the eyes of people in the past.
Suddenly, they "see" a street filled with anger and emotion.
It's 1968 Chicago. Chaos and confusion rule the night!
My scholars immerse themselves in the scene. They live and breathe the times and the troubles to the point that they truly understand the social themes that I am trying to teach them. If I taught history solely through the textbook, their yawns would be a mile wide. They would probably stage a riot right in the classroom! (Of course that would provide a few teachable moments!) I teach four different classes of 7th and 8th graders. Each class has 26 students. My students are full of energy. They get excited about great stories and engaging characters. They need and deserve high quality literature that brings American history to life. With this book set and focused independent reading times, I can provide a reference point and background knowledge for them to better understand the often confusing events and details from the textbook.
My Project
Our unit on civil rights will focus in part on the 1968 riots in Chicago. Those turbulent times are a focus of these exciting and realistic books. They bring to life the issues of the times and the different perspectives that still fill the air of Chicago to this day. The unit will feature several great projects and role-playing opportunities. The kids will pour their creativity into dioramas, Powerpoints, etc. These motivating projects will be well served by the authentic perspectives and realistic storylines that these books provide.
Our school budget is tight and materials are scarce.
Thank you for considering our request. My students love to learn and these books will open up a whole new world for them. Thanks so much for your consideration. My scholars are lucky to have your generous support!
