This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are new to fifth grade and it can be a difficult grade level for many of them, especially with all the demands that middle school will ask of them. Most are NOT on grade level, which makes targeting their needs and weaknesses harder without the right materials.

We have limited resources and due to ever increasing budget cuts, we keep getting less and less.

And what we DO have is lacking and must be shared by several teachers. Having our own supplies would make classrooms run more smoothly.

My Project

My students need two each of eleven graphic novels, including Emperor of the Airwaves, The Adventures of Scarygirl and Treasure Island, to support their growing need of reading. Graphic Novels bring otherwise difficult text to life through pictures and comic book style writing. It's a challenge for many who never read a comic book, so it builds up their exposure to different genres.

It's also beneficial for the avid comic book reader to read important novels like Huckleberry Finn and Treasure Island through a more graphic novel of pictures and action.

Many students gravitate to books with pictures because they need those visual clues to keep their focus. Little do they know, they are building their vocabulary and reading levels by engaging in these graphic novels. Who doesn't love pictures anyway?
