My Students

Do you remember what it was like to read a book that you truly enjoyed? Were you able to pick it up and read it over and over again? My students live in an area where there is no public library in walking distance and no school library. So the only access they have to books is in my classroom.

I am a sixth grade teacher in Illinois.

I have 24 students in my classroom and I teach all subjects. My school is in a very low income neighborhood and there is a great need for supplies. We are finally off probation and are working very hard to keep it that way. We need books that our students are interested in reading. They continue to grow through book clubs and I like to supply them with books they REALLY want to read. Right now all of my students are obsessed with graphic novels and have read all of the ones I have in my library.

My Project

I work very hard with my students to instill a love for reading. I have struggled for the last seven years to create an awesome classroom library for my students. There is no library in the school and the public library is too far away and the neighborhood to dangerous to walk to, so the books they read, they get from me. I am using book clubs to help my readers become fluent readers. I really need 9 sets of books (6 copies of each book) at different levels so that all of my kids will have a book they are able to read. I would love to have these graphic novels because I know every one of my students would be thrilled to read a graphic novel in book club. When a child reads a book at their reading level that they enjoy, it promotes confidence and that helps improve all reading skills. I would truly appreciate these Graphic Novels so that each and every student can successfully read a book!

Success in school and success in life depends on the ability to read.

Students should have the opportunity to learn this skill with books that they love and are interested in. Please help me to reach this goal, so my students now and in the future will develop a love for reading!
