Help me give my students quality novels for in-class book groups to develop a greater understanding of literature and stimulating titles that encourage independent reading.

My Students

My students live in a neighborhood afflicted by poverty. Parents work two to three jobs. Families do all they can but the demands of providing for housing and food often leave families strapped to provide the "extra enrichment" of zoo trips, new release books, educational camps or summer programs, or even after school activities. The students in my class face many harsh realities of poverty. Despite the uncertainty of their home lives, the classroom provides them encouragement, stability, and crucial skills.

Reading transports students to places and times and increases their knowledge of the world.

Research is documenting the hardship poverty creates in education. Over 51 percent of students in our school receive free or reduced-price meals and a third of them are native Spanish speakers. These are my students and they desire to build a better life for themselves.

Sharing my passion for learning is an underlining goal for my year. Having interest and curiosity for the world and how everything fits together is so important for these students. Great book club sets and well-stocked class library are inexpensive ways to travel the world and learn about other peoples and times.

My Project

This year, we have really focused on discovering the joy that comes from reading. My students have been enjoying meeting with a book club each Friday and discussing the books they are reading together. It has been such a treat for me to see their faces light up as they become excited about the stories they are reading.

My students are learning to love the magic waiting to be discovered between the pages of a great book.

In order for our book clubs to be successful, we need to have multiple copies of each book so that each student can have their own copy. My students have requested several books they would love to do for book club. I'm requesting copies of Al Capone Does My Shirts, The War that Saved My Life, Wings of Fire, Hatchet, Among the Hidden, When You Reach Me, Number the Stars, and Out of the Dust.

My students will be beyond thrilled if these titles are made available to them. Many of these titles support 5th grade US History standards.
