My Students

Imagine a room full of energetic first graders, all eager to share and learn. I am lucky enough to spend my days with just such a group. I teach in a small elementary school located in a suburb of Detroit.

Our school is a very large part of the neighborhood.

Students walk to and from school with their parents, grandparents, big sisters and big brothers. It's easy to touch base and connect with students' families because I have the opportunity to see them regularly.

My Project

As I look around my classroom, I see some youngsters tipping back in their chairs while others squirm back and forth in their seats, unable to concentrate. In the past, I've tried unsuccessfully to settle these students down and attempt to have them focus.

I've learned that the kids are showing me that they need to move more.

"Maybe we can get some different kinds of chairs." "I'd rather sit on a stool." "Can we have a movement break?" "Is it recess time yet?" These are the voices of first graders who know what they need. If my students had more seating options in the classroom, wobble chairs and stools, they would be able to move more throughout the day and focus more on learning.
