I am in a special spot this year. I tri-teach with two other teachers (one is general education and one is special education). Together, we tackle the education of forty-one students. The three of us constantly work together to meet the needs of all of our students.
The group we have this year is a vibrant group of fifth graders.
They enjoy working in small groups and partners. They enjoy getting out of their seat to work. They love when we play games to reinforce learning.
Our classes are homes to students on special education plans. Eighteen out of the forty-one students are on some type of education goal. Despite our great range of ability, each student has done their part to make our rooms caring communities, helping one another and pushing one another to do their very best.
My Project
Having these four standing desks with foot swing capabilities would give my fifth graders more options when it comes to working. Many studies show how standing desks boost engagement, allows them to be more active, and helps them to get their fidgets out.
My fellow tri-teacher has one in her room now and most of the of the students beg to sit there.
It's not necessarily for everyone, but by adding four into my classroom, I can allow students an opportunity for bodily movement throughout the day. My goal is to give each child a chance at the desks, and if their interested to create a rotation to meet their needs.
This would be the first step for flexible seating in my classroom. I would love to see this grow into other options!
