My students need flexible seating options to allow them to make instruction time more effective and comfortable for them. The bean bags, balance ball chairs, foam mats, rug and hammock will make this possible.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I campus with many of our student population receiving free or reduced lunch. My classroom serves students with special needs by providing them with the tools and guidance they need to reach their full potential in the general education setting. Harvey had a major impact on our school and community. While some of my students' homes were flooded, others lost everything. My students are resilient and show up every day ready to learn. We are in the process of getting back on track and making up lost instructional time.
The students in my classroom are all on the Autism Spectrum.
This means it can be challenging for them to stay focused without fidgeting or some movement. Sitting still for extended periods of time while in class can be a challenge.
My Project
These materials will give my students options during instructional time. The rug will give students something comfortable to sit on in our listening station. The bean bag chairs, balance ball chairs, and foam mats will be used by students during independent work by allowing them a variety of ways to complete their work. They will no longer have to sit at a desk or table if they are more comfortable on the floor with a foam mat or using a bean bag. These students will be able to use a lap desk to put their work on while they are using the flexible seating options to complete assignments. The therapy swing will be used by students who are feeling overwhelmed and need a sensory break.
Providing a variety of flexible seating options will reduce sensory meltdowns, provide a sense of community within the classroom, and promote student engagement.
Using different seating for different areas in the classroom will also provide concrete examples of what is expected of the students through the use of visuals. Each area is set up with their own unique individual visuals.
