My Students

Every morning while sitting in my office before the tardy bell rings, I have at least 5-6 different kids drop in and ask "Do I have PE today?!" I quickly think about what day it is (we are on an A, B, C, D day schedule), what class they are in, and when that class has PE. If they have PE that day they immediately let out an excited "YAY!" and scurry on to their homeroom with their breakfast in hand.

I teach at a Title 1 elementary school where 85% of our students receive free and reduced lunch.

My students live in apartment buildings or in a dangerous neighborhood where going outside is unsafe or time is limited and therefore they are stuck inside watching TV or playing video games. These students need to move, I can see it when they come to school; they live for recess and the days they have PE. The schedule only allows my students PE once a week- that is only 50 minutes every 5 to 6 days. Since I am limited in my amount of time with them, my goal is to keep my students moving as much as I can.

My Project

I received an inexpensive set of pedometers that were donated to every school in our district through an organization. We were grateful, however the pedometers would keep breaking until I did not have enough for the entire class to use. The motivation in class decreased when we could no longer wear them and it has been a goal since then to buy new pedometers My project is to have a class set of 32 Worker Bee Pedometers with hinged covers and spring loaded clips. This class set will be used for all 22 classes I teach during the week.

With a class set of durable pedometers attached to the top of their pants these kiddos will be putting some miles on their shoes.

Pedometers will be put on at the start of each class to see how many steps are taken during the planned activities. They will then be taken off at the end of class and kept in a hanging pocket chart. Scores will be kept in a binder to help track their progress throughout the year. At the end of the year we will total up the scores to see how many steps they took the entire school year in PE.
