it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a high poverty area. They have many obstacles to overcome before they even get to school. Many are ESL newcomers who are adjusting to a new environment. Some are home alone while their parents are working. They may be living with grandparents or in foster care because of situations they have no control over. Several are ADD, ADHD, or Autistic.
Incredibly, they mostly come with a heart full of love and a desire to learn.
My partner teacher and I have a variety of ability levels in our classroom.
My Project
Do you remember what it's like to be 10? Ten year old kids need to move around. Sitting in a classroom can be difficult for anyone, but especially so for kids with ADD, ADHD, or Autism.
Opportunities to wiggle and fidget can determine the difference between success and failure.
My students are taught to self-monitor and use whatever helps them feel comfortable and focused in our classroom. Spinners, fidget cubes, and other sensory items help kids stay focused while getting the wiggles out.
Light filters create a sense of calm for kids who often feel stressed and anxious in the classroom. While they seem like small things, the impact can be huge.
