My students need more options for flexible seating in our classroom. Items such as the Wobble Chair, Balance Balls, balance disks, and lap trays will allow students to choose the way they want to focus.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our classroom has a wide range of diverse learners and individual needs. It is very important for my students to have a voice in their classroom. When they talk, I listen. My students overwhelmingly desire an active change in their learning environment.
Do you think you could reach your academic potential, if you were forced to sit in a hard chair for 7 hours a day?
I would imagine not, and neither do my students. My students spoke loud and clear. They love when they get to work on the floor, with a pillow, or gently bounce on our one classroom yoga ball seat. The problem is, I have 32 students!
I work hard to differentiate instruction and allow for choices within the classroom. Also, our students need to work in a hands-on way. Flexible furniture also helps to create a strong, positive classroom culture that is critical to establishing a safe environment for all of our students to learn.
My Project
I noticed that some of my students would lose focus during instruction. Sometimes they would find it difficult to stay still at their seats. So, in my search for the solutions, I did the unthinkable. I asked THEM for suggestions.
My students confided in me that they wanted to pay attention, but it was hard to sit still.
Their bodies were full of energy, and they couldn't help but move around. I suggested the idea of bringing in a yoga ball for them to try out, and their eyes lit up like fireworks! I want my whole class to get to experience that same joy, a new way of learning. My kids asked, and I listened. They like to move, so let them move! Lap trays, wobble chairs, balance balls, bouncey bands, and fidget toys will allow my students the ability to focus on learning, while getting out their wiggles, too! My Lakers fans will also love using the mini basketball hoop to play exciting review games!
