Our classroom is located in a small school in rural western Minnesota. Students come into my classroom each day full of energy and ready to see what exciting, new thing we will be doing for the day.
My students have inquisitive minds and crave to know more about the world around them.
To help them focus and attend to various learning tasks during the school day I have implemented flexible seating into my classroom. Flexible seating is a choice provided to students that allows them to work around our classroom comfortably. They love the empowerment, collaboration, and physical activity that flexible seating offers them.
My Project
Have you ever had to sit in an uncomfortable, hard chair for a long period of time? Could you focus on anything but how uncomfortable you were? I started the flexible seating journey two years ago with all students on yoga balls. This year I’ve split the class with half of them using yoga balls and the other half using wobble seats. I’ve seen the positive effects these tools have had on my students’ learning.
The flexible seating has provided my students with opportunities to wiggle and move so they can focus on their learning and be more productive.
It allows for children in my classroom to stay focused for longer periods of time as well as giving them control over their learning and the power to find a classroom work space that feels right for them.
My 2nd graders work hard each day and challenge their minds through many different activities. I would like to add more flexible seating options to my classroom so I am requesting medical stools, ball stands, yoga mats and soft cushions. Each of my students deserves to learn in comfort and to feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.
