We Learn When We Wiggle and We Wobble

My students need alternative seating options and choices within our co-taught classroom.

My Students

Throughout a child’s school career, many find themselves with labels that cause them to be removed from the general classroom into a specialized resource room for help. In our co-taught classes, the stigma that often comes with being labeled special ed. in middle school is lessened or non-existent. We have three periods of language arts that consist of a wide variety of student abilities. They come with a variety of experience that helps them learn from each other. Some students experience success for the first time within the walls of our class while others realize their leadership potential.

In our classroom, students learn to value each other’s differences and the contributions that each person can make.

Our students are energetic, kind, and excited to learn. In our class, they are not only learning academic skills, but they learn life skills that will help them be productive individually, as well as, part of a team. They are amazing kids!

My Project

Kids bouncing on yoga balls! Balls shooting across the room! T-stools slamming to the floor! (Although fun for them, not so fun for us!) Garage sale stools at the back of the room! Homemade sit/stand desks! You name it, we’ve tried it with our energetic and active students. These students often find it challenging to sit in a standard chair. Alas, we believe we have found a solution to our alternative seating dilemma.

This donation of wobble stools will benefit our fidgety, active learners, as well as all students within our classroom.

We recently discovered wobble stools at High Tech Elementary in San Diego, California, while there for a conference on Deeper Learning. These stools provide the ability to move without the chaos of bouncing and falling students. We were able to try these out ourselves, and we could see that the stools remain where they are placed while allowing students to wiggle and wobble. In our attempt to help our students delve deeper into their learning, we believe these stools will help facilitate that.
