My Students

Our school is located in a small town in rural northeastern Wisconsin. I work with students in grades kindergarten through sixth who need extra support in reading. They are a great group of kids who work hard and they put forth a lot of effort to succeed in the classroom. We spend time every day working on our reading and writing skills to strengthen all areas of our education.

Our elementary school is comprised of approximately 635 students with 43% economically disadvantaged.

Of those students, approximately 16% need additional small group reading or math support.

My Project

Learning to read takes practice. Our English language can be so confusing when it comes to all the words that have exceptions and do not sound the way they look. These books are completely made up of decodable text which means the student will be able to use their phonics skills to sound out all the words. These books also look like chapter books so students in second grade and up look like they are reading regular chapter books that his or her classmates are reading.

Successful reading builds fluency which strengthens comprehension.

Once students are able to successfully read books that are a little bit longer it will build their stamina and build their interest in reading deeper and more meaningful text.
