My Students
Taking Pre-Calculus is needed to perform well on the SAT and college entrance exams. Not all students are able to bring calculators to class, but need them to complete classwork and master the concepts being taught, especially the trigonometric functions.
My students are low-income, many first generation college bound students, attending a high needs inner city school in the heart of Massachusetts.
They work very hard to do well in school, but many lack the financial aid to buy the technology required to master concepts.
My Project
My classroom has the TI calculators velcroed to the desk so all students have a calculator to use during class. Velcroing the calculators to the desk keeps the calculators in the class and ensures they do not get legs and go missing. However, my class size keeps growing and growing. Although it is a challenge to teach large classes, it is wonderful so many students are taking Pre-Calculus and striving to do well in a rigorous class and prepare for college. By using the calculators, the students will be able to master trigonometry and other high order mathematical concepts. Many of these concepts are on the SAT/ACT and college entrance exams.
