Do you remember as a child the excitement of walking into school on the first day of a new year? It wasn't just your new room or your new teacher. It was also carrying a new bookbag bulging with school supplies. It was the smell of new crayons, smooth to the touch, with sharpened points. It was having a new pack of cool, unsharpened pencils. It was having that squirt bottle of Elmer's glue and a blunt pair of scissors. It was a great new notebook and a pack of unopened lined paper for writing. There was construction paper for art activities and a small homework pad to write down reading, math, science or social studies homework assignments. What a great memory!
Now imagine this. You are eight years old. You walk into your new room to start a new school year without a bookbag. You look around at other children. You see them unpacking new crayons, unsharpened pencils, bottles of glue, and other wonderful looking school supplies. As a third grade teacher in a school with a 90% poverty rating I hear that every year. Some children say it matter-of-factly, while other children say it crying. There are many reasons why children start a new school year without supplies. One reason is our county has the second highest unemployment rate in the state. Another reason is that some families are trying to get several children supplied for the new year. Other reasons include sickness or single parents not being able to make ends meet.
I would like for you to help me prevent this from happening in my classroom. Together, you and I can make a difference. I would like to have three books bags bulging with the kind of supplies that would make an eight year old jump for joy. I need you to buy the three bookbags. I'll get the supplies. Together we can help every child in my room to begin their year with a smile.
