My third grade class is planning a field trip to Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. The issue with cost is our transportation. We will be sharing the bus with another class so our cost would be half of that plus admission to Fort Sumter. This is a lot of money for our families! Most of my class qualifies for free lunch. This trip will cover many of our state standards. We of course study the Civil War and many of South Carolina's leaders during that time. A trip to Fort Sumter would put them right in the middle of the action. Students get to ride on a boat to get to the fort. Many of our children have never been on a boat. Most of them have never even seen our very own coastline. They will get to see the famous Charleston Battery and of course Fort Sumter! We are going no matter what. I just hope that none of our children are left sitting at school because their family could't afford it. Again this is an opportunity I would like for every child in my class to have. Our school is 1-3 grade and our Title I Federal funding has just been drastically reduced.
