it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We often hear that urban schools have few books. I can say, the books in my own classroom are mostly provided by garage sales and my own childhood. Recently, my director provided money for students to create their own classroom library, but we have no place to put the books!
My students come from all around Chicago to attend my school.
Our school is a hard working charter school on the north side of Chicago. My students' parents have chosen to send them here, and they have very high expectations. Aside from the expectations from the school, as students with special needs, they have a set of goals and expectations that are specific to them.
Each of my students have one or more disabilities. They face unique challenges each day. Each of them struggle to learn with the general population of students and many of them face challenges at home. Even though they get frustrated and are significantly challenged, they have found a way to be successful and I want to show them we recognize their achievements.
My Project
About three weeks ago I was sent an e-mail giving me permission to order a classroom library full of books. As some of you may know, the special education classrooms do not often get these opportunities. Therefore, I handed over the responsibility of choosing these books to my students. When I told them they had this opportunity, they were extremely excited. They took this job very seriously. No one had ever given them books. They had a unique challenge of finding books that are at their reading level, but also within their interests at the middle school level.
The students have expressed to me how important it is that they get the books they can read, and that they need to take care of them. They have been cleaning up our classroom literacy area to make sure that they have room for their new books. They have even made the decision to make an assembly line of "book stamping" so that everyone in the school knows that these book belong to the students in our classroom.
This is the first time that many of my students have been offered something new.
They are very used to getting hand-me-downs, photocopies out of books, or having to share materials. They are excited about these books. They want to take care of these books. By having a place to put their new books, they will be able to look at them, organize them and keep them in a safe place. This is one of the first things that my students will take ownership for. That is why we need a new bookshelf.
