My students need African, rhythm instruments to play and dance to as they explore sounds of African cultures. These include two Advent Djembes, two Rain forest Floor Toms and a Rain forest Gathering Drum.

My Students
My students learn best by being immersed in whatever they are learning. Rather than simply listening to and analyzing music of Africa, they benefit most from actually experiencing the music through playing on the instruments.
My students attend a school where over eighty percent of them receive free or reduced lunch.
They come from low-income backgrounds, but they are not poor. They are rich in potential. This includes their potential for creativity. My students have a capacity to create and a curiosity that allows them to absorb everything they see, hear, and especially, what they do.
My Project
Imagine a group of 5 and 6 years old students gathering around an African song or dance rhythm. Some are playing a steady pattern on two djembes (indigenous, beautifully resonant drums) and others improvising rhythms with the smaller, hand held drums. They are completely engrossed in the experience and engaged in the moment of creation.
This project will benefit over 200 students this year and eventually, will benefit 600 students every year as our music program grows.
Also, it will continue to benefit students each year that they are part of our program. Because of this project, students will find a voice and a way of creating in which they can experience success.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
