My students love to move! They are excited and just can't hide it. They are 4 and 5 years old entering kindergarten, with tons of energy bursting at the seams. I love allowing my students to really get into the lessons and exert some energy. Our only problem is there isn't enough space on the rug.
This upcoming school year I will be teaching kindergarten!
I've worked with kindergarten before and it is one of my favorite grades to teach. They have so much to offer one another; it is a true learning experience for everyone, myself included.
I am so lucky to be working on a team with such amazing teachers. This team is so genuine, helpful, and loving - these kinders are going to have an exciting year ahead of them.
Kindergarten is a tricky year because I don't know how many attended pre-k allowing them to be familiarized with a school setting. Despite their prior schooling, they all enter with feelings of both excitement and nerves. I make sure I welcome them all with open arms, making them feel comfortable - let's face it teachers get butterflies meeting their new classes as well.
Kindergarten is a precious grade where they just need to explore. Exploration is key to building the foundation of our young critical thinkers.
My Project
As an elementary teacher, I have the students sit on the rug for a good portion of the day, whether it's for whole class instruction, small groups, or independent work. I love to see my students relaxed on the rug and working with each other.
With that being said, currently it is very difficult to keep my students focused on the rug because of lack of space. No matter how engaging the lesson is they are more concerned with who is too close to who.
With this rug, I will be able to space them out - allowing them the necessary room to engage in more activities as a larger group. There are some teachers who have a spacious rug and the kids sit in their spots with ease. And that is what I'd like to see in my class this year; Hassle-free rug spots.
This rug will allow my students to eliminate unnecessary distractions, eliminate bickering between one-another, and allow them to remain engaged through the lesson. As a kindergarten teacher, this rug can contribute to an amazing year!
This rug will truly impact the instructional time in my classroom.
When the kids are sitting comfortably, their undivided attention is on me. Allowing more time for learning and less time for distractions. My students also deserve a place they can relax to complete assignments. Nothing brightens my day more than to hear a student ask to work with a buddy on the rug. This project can allow more peer-learning in my class. Overall, they are full of energy and need a safe space to exert it.
