I am a 2nd grade teaching fellow in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free school lunch. One of my main goals as a teacher is to educate the students about the world around them. Throughout the school year we have learned about various places around the globe, from large cosmopolitan cities to South American rainforests. While studying all of these varying parts of the world, the students have paid specific attention to one common theme, and that is the pollution and destruction present in all of these places. This awareness has motivated my students to want to do something about this problem. Last year I initiated a Clean Up & Beautification Committee comprised of teachers at my school. This year I am including my students in all of the committee's clean-up and beautification efforts. As part of our beautification efforts, I would like to set up a Butterfly Garden within our school garden. The students took a particular liking to butterflies after we visited the Butterfly Conservatory at the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan. This visit, combined with many read-alouds about the rainforest, has caused the students to take a deep interest in caring for the Earth and the many creatures that inhabit it. We have already set up many flowers and trees for our garden - now all we need are the butterflies! I am requesting 6 butterfly classroom kits so that the entire 2nd grade may participate in this excellent activity. I am also requesting books about butterflies in order to provide students with additional information. While students do something nice for the Earth, they will also be learning about the life cycle of a butterfly, which is part of the 2nd grade science standards. We want to show our students that it is possible to make a difference. Now is the time to teach our children to be respectful and nurturing to all living things on the planet. Please help us make a beautiful addition to our school.
